Beware "Brand Spoofing" Spam

Saturday July 12, 2003
Every once in awhile I get an actual email message from an actual person who I actually know and who has an actual reason to communicate with me. Sometimes they are rare and the gap between them is filled with spam- ads for Viagra, prescription drugs, low mortgage rates, online casinos and my good friends from Nigeria who just need my help to smuggle their $30 million out of the country. There is a new class of spam known as "brand spoofing" which crosses the line from spam to identity theft. Using brand spoofing, the spammers attempt to trick you into providing personal and confidential information such as your credit card info by posing as the company they are spoofing and preying on your trust of that brand name. To learn more read this article: Warning Goes Out On New Spam Attacks.
