Netgear Flaw Triggers DoS Attack Against University of Wisconsin

Thursday August 28, 2003
Hardware manufacturer Netgear has admitted that a flaw in the NTP (Network Time Protocol) implementation in some of their routers was the cause of a Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack against the University of Wisconsin. NTP is used to automatically synchronize the time and date and automatically update them to stay on track. At one point Netgear routers were flooding the University of Wisconsin time server with up to 250,000 requests per second. Netgear has stated that they will help the University of Wisconsin with handling the problem and have release a patch to repair the flaw in the affected routers (models RP614, RP614v2, DG814, MR814 and HR314). To read more about this issue you can read this article on CNet's News.com: Netgear flaw triggers accidental DoS attack. If you have an affected Netgear router you can visit this link to download the appropriate firmware patch: Netgear NTP Flaw Patch.
