The protection of critical or proprietary files and folders on a corporate network is an imperative of network administration and security. With legislative mandates such as Sarbanes-Oxley, Gramm-Leach-Bliley and the HIPAA it becomes even more crucial for many companies. The question is, does providing the appropriate level of security require the purchase or implementation of 3rd-party tools, or can the necessary security be put in place using the controls built-in to the operating systems and applications already in use?
