Symantec Acquires Anti-Spam Firm TurnTide

Wednesday July 14, 2004
Only months after purchasing one of the leading anti-spam companies, Brightmail, Symantec has acquired TurnTide. TurnTide makes a router-based antispam device which blocks the unwanted messages at the network perimeter. Symantec plans to include it with the previous Brightmail acquisition in a multi-tier anti-spam solution. The United States implemented the CAN SPAM Act which many feel has done more to legitimize spam than it has to deter it. A recent eWeek article estimates that spam costs companies approximately $2000 per employee per year, an increase of more than 100% in just the past year and Symantec hopes to provide an integrated solution to help companies stem the tide of spam and cut the employee productivity losses.
