Big Brother Gains New Powers To Watch Over You

Last Wednesday United States Attorney General John Ashcroft and the Justice Department won a battle to expand their spying capabilities granted under the 1994 CALEA (Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act). CALEA originally applied only to telephone communications, but law enforcement agencies petitioned the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) to expand the interpretation to include Internet broadband and VoIP (Voice over IP) providers.
