Wireless Security Improves With 802.11i

Tuesday October 5, 2004
When the standards were created for wireless networking security was somewhat an afterthought. The WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) standard was thrown together quickly and it didn't take long for huge holes to be discovered in it. WPA (WiFi Protected Access) was introduced later to replace the WEP security and provides substantially better security, however with encryption based on the RC4 algorithm even WPA is not as secure as it could be. New devices are on the market now which support the 802.11i standards which include stronger encryption based on the AES algorithm. To learn more about the 802.11i wireless standard and the increased security read this Network World article: 802.11i: The next big thing.
