Keeping Security Breaches Secret
Sunday February 20, 2005
There are many crimes that go unreported. The victims may feel that it is too embarrassing or too traumatic to be worth dragging out. Sometimes they feel that their will be too much hassle and red tape to make it worth it to pursue. Computer and Internet security breaches are certainly one of those many crimes that go largely unreported. Corporations tend to feel that the negative publicity and loss of consumer trust are a larger risk than the attack itself. There have been some discussions and initiatives aimed at compelling corporations to disclose security breaches which I wrote about a while back (To Disclose Or Not To Disclose). For more information about a recent study done regarding corporate hacking attacks being reported publicly, see this Yahoo! News article: Hacking Attacks Rarely Made Public, Experts Say.
