Thursday March 3, 2005
A network protocol analyzer, more commonly referred to as a "packet sniffer" is a valuable tool for network administrators. Using information collected with a packet sniffer can provide key information for troubleshooting and diagnosing all sorts of network issues. Unfortunately, packet sniffers can also be used for less ethical purposes such as collecting usernames, passwords and other sensitive information from a network. This is a profile of one of the most popular and widely used packet sniffers available. Ethereal is a powerful network protocol analyzer available for free as an open source project application.
