FTC Shuts Down SpyKiller

Wednesday July 6, 2005
Have you ever received a pop-up ad on your computer that looked like an official notification from Windows that your computer appears to be infected with spyware? Trustsoft, makers of SpyKiller, used that ad fraudulently according to the FTC because, in fact, no scan of the system had yet taken place. If users downloaded and ran the "free" anti-spyware software and actually performed a scan, the scan would appear to find active "spyware" processes which were actually common, legitimate programs in order to entice users to pay the $40 to have the spyware removed. For more about the FTC actions against Trustsoft, see this article in The Register: Judge bans company's deceptive anti-spyware claims.
