Open Source Closing?

Monday October 10, 2005
Last week there were a few announcements that rocked the world of open source, particularly open source network security software. Renaud Deraison, primary author of Nessus and Chief Research Officer for Tenable Network Security, announced that the next version of Nessus, Nessus 3, will be available for free, but that it will no longer be released under the GPL license or be allowed to be distributed freely. It was also announced that Checkpoint, makers of the Firewall-1 product, will be purchasing Sourcefire, the makers of the popular open source IDS Snort. According to the announcement, Snort will continue to be developed under the GPL though. On Friday, it was also announced that Oracle is buying Innobase, makers of the open source database software InnoDB which is distributed as a part of the very popular MySQL open source database program.
