The phrase "you get what you pay for" is not necessarily a universal truth. In the area of computer and network security, there are a number of products available completely free of charge. Some of them may not be as robust or feature-rich as their commercial counterparts, but some of them lead their respective fields, setting the bar for their competition. In the end, whether the product you use has all of the bells and whistles of off-the-shelf products or not, the protection it offers is still better than nothing most likely.
