It opens up a new realm of criminal and computer forensics and forces investigators to develop new methods of obtaining and preserving evidence so that it holds up to legal scrutiny. The ITtoolbox Blogs have a case involving an iPod with a good discussion of the unique aspects of building a case around an iPod. To read it, or even add your 2 cents to the comments, check out Crack The Case: Child Pr0n Found On Man's iPod?. Portable storage also brings up issues with protecting data.
