iPod Forensics

Tuesday March 7, 2006
An iPod is just one example of a portable storage device which could conceivably contain illegal or illicit data. Other thumb drives and USB storage devices could fall into this same category. It opens up a new realm of criminal and computer forensics and forces investigators to develop new methods of obtaining and preserving evidence so that it holds up to legal scrutiny. The ITtoolbox Blogs have a case involving an iPod with a good discussion of the unique aspects of building a case around an iPod. To read it, or even add your 2 cents to the comments, check out Crack The Case: Child Pr0n Found On Man's iPod?. Portable storage also brings up issues with protecting data. Users may transfer sensitive or confidential data onto portable storage devices which are easily lost or stolen.
