Storing and Remembering Passwords Securely
Monday May 15, 2006
I love being able to pay the bills at the push of a button. No more check writing. No more stamps. No more taking bill payments to the mailbox. The problem is that I have a different password for every bill. Remembering which username and password go to the gas company, which go to the Visa account, which go to the mortgage lender, etc. each month can be difficult. Writing them all down or storing them in a text file on my computer would make them easy for someone to steal and would negate the whole point of securing the account in the first place. Creating secure passwords actually makes the job of recalling them a little more difficult, as each one is unique and contains a mix of character types. Eventually, I found that using a password management tool to store and remember my passwords securely was much easier and more efficient than clicking on the 'Forgot Your Password?' link to have it re-delivered to my email each month.
