Regarding the lastest Microsoft service “patches” aren’t these automatically downloaded now anytime you log onto the Internet? Or do you need to download these yourself, e.g., the one for IE 6.0 and then install them by running the .exe?

(2) Tony Bradley, CISSP-ISSAP says:

That all depends on whether you have Automatic Updates turned on or not. In general, home users should take advantage of the Automatic Updates feature, but those who do not will still need to manually retrieve these updates or at least manually visit the Windows Update site to scan their computer to find which patches apply.
