'Hacking Democracy' Highlights Controversy Over Electronic Voting
Sunday November 5, 2006
Electronic voting sounds good on the surface. Why use confusing paper ballots or risk the issues from the 2000 election with the 'hanging chad', when you can just use simple touch screens and have the votes counted more quickly electronically? Well, there are a couple good reasons. First, is that the voters need to have some sort of assurance or proof that the votes they cast are the votes that are recorded. The electronic voting machines can programmatically rig the election. The second is that even if the programmers and manufacturers of electronic voting machines have pure intentions, the machines can be hacked and possibly have the vote tally hijacked. HBO is producing a documentary called 'Hacking Democracy' which highlights some of the controvery of electronic voting, specifically security issues with Diebold electronic voting machines.
