Firefox and Safari Increasingly Targeted

Friday May 2, 2008
Firefox and Safari have both continued to gain market share in the Web browser wars. They are both still far behind the dominant Internet Explorer, but they are gaining in popularity among users...and attackers. Many users who have switched from Internet Explorer to alternate browsers did so for security reasons. They were tired of the vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer being attacked and they were under the impression that these other products were more secure. That can be debated. Alternate web browsers are primarily more secure by obscurity, not by superior code. In other words, the reason they are safe is that they are too small of a target for attackers to waste their time on. However, the more their market share grows, the more these web browsers will be attacked. According to this PC World article, there were no Internet Explorer vulnerabilities identified recently, but Mozilla has released two recent updates fixing 5 Critical vulnerabilities in Firefox. Apple's Safari has issues as well, and you may have it and not even know it after a recent stealth push by Apple.
