Protecting Your Windows PC (for FREE)

Friday May 30, 2008
There are a lot of tools available to protect your computer system. Some tools are built in to the operating system. Depending on which version of Windows you are using, you have tools available such as the Windows Firewall, Windows Defender (antispyware tool), Bitlocker or EFS (data encryption technologies), and more. There are also a number of commercial products available like DriveShield, Zone Alarm ForceField, or McAfee Home Wireless Network Security. But, if you want to provide additional security tools beyond what is built-in to the operating system, or as a replacement for the built-in tools, and you don't want to spend money on commercial software, there are still plenty of tools available. I have links to a variety of Free Tools here on the About.com Internet / Network Security site. I also recommend that you take a look at this article from NetworkWorld: Essential (and free) security downloads for Windows.

Thanks for this up-to-date and quite comprehensive list of free security programs. I teach Internet Security for a Florida senior citizen’s group, and I want to use this listing as a class resource (by the way, every program I’ve been recommending for the past 3 years is on your list).

Keep up the good work.
