Tenable Changes Nessus Licensing
Thursday June 12, 2008
Nessus is highly respected, and in many circles is accepted as the 'gold standard' for vulnerability scanning applications. Nessus began life as a completely free open source project. A few years ago Tenable Network Security, the company founded by Nessus creator Renaud Deraison and the primary benefactor of Nessus, decided to alter the licensing and start charging fees for some tiers of service. The application itself has remained free, but access to some features and faster updates has required a subscription to the Direct Feed. Recently, Tenable announced a new change in the licensing structure. The application itself will still be free to everyone. However, recognizing the growing needs of the home user market, Tenable created the HomeFeed license which provides the functionality and real-time updates of the DirectFeed subscription at no charge for personal use on home networks. The Direct Feed service will be renamed ProfessionalFeed, and the Registered Feed is discontinued. For businesses and organizations that have relied on the free Registered Feed, this means you will now be required to pay the fee to subscribe to the ProfessionalFeed. To help out with the transition, Tenable is offering a 25% rebate to companies that subscribe to the Direct Feed service between now and July 31 when the new licensing goes into effect. In addition, Tenable will provide the ProfessionalFeed service for free to qualified non-profit and educational organizations.
