4 Minutes To Compromise

Thursday July 17, 2008
How fast can you download all of the latest patches? Well, if you were to install Windows from scratch on a PC, then connect to the Internet to download all of the latest updates, you would only have an estimated 4 minutes before your new Windows PC was compromised or infected in some way by automated malware attacks. Four minutes. If your Internet connection goes through a home router or wireless access point, you are significantly safer since almost all home routers have a built-in firewall of some sort. It is recommended that you also make sure that the Windows Firewall or some other personal firewall program is running on the system as well. At least with these measures in place you greatly increase the odds that you can download and apply the patches before your system gets '0wn3d'. Take a look at Unpatched Windows PCs own3d in less than four minutes for more about the report.
