'Spam King' Dead in Murder / Suicide
Friday July 25, 2008
I am not a fan of spam. I try to keep things in perspective though. It is just email. I have filters that move it to my Junkmail folder without me having to ever see it. It doesn't really matter to me whether I receive 10 or 10,000 other than what impact it might have on my network bandwidth. So, I definitely think there should be laws against spam and that spammers should be prosecuted, but I think of 'spamming' as sort of a geek crime of a different class than say armed bank robbery. I was a little shocked then to find out that 'Spam King' Eddie Davidson escaped from prison a few days ago. It was only a 21 month sentence at a minimum security facility. In the grand scheme of potential punishment and incarceration options for a felony offense, Davidson's sentence seemed quite reasonable. I was substantially more shocked then to learn that he killed his wife, and his toddler daughter, as well as attempting to kill a teenage girl before turning the gun on himself and committing suicide.

wow.
Okay, sure, spamming isn’t ‘bank robbery’, but the costs of it - bandwidth, viruses, phishing - are considerable. I can’t say that I’m sad at all that this moron is dead, because it was probably the only way he was going to learn his lesson. I only wish the guy sending out those annoying lottery scams would do the same.
If the moron hadn’t taken out his family along with himself I’d be positively giddy about the whole thing. Now if the rest of the spammers and all of the virus / trojan / spyware writers could meet the same fate the world would be a better place. No wait, the lawyers, politicians, terrorists and OPEC board members would have to go too…
What a complete loser.
