Researcher Releases Exploit for SCADA Networks

Thursday September 11, 2008
What is SCADA you ask? That is a very good question to start with in order to understand why you might care if the SCADA networks are exploited. SCADA is an acronym for Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition. SCADA systems are computer networks dedicated to monitoring and controlling industrial processes and they make up the backbone of the utilities that we rely on each day such as electricity, oil and gas refineries, water treatment plants, etc.

It has long been suggested that there are weaknesses in our SCADA networks that could expose us to severe threats. One researcher claims to have found such a vulnerability that he felt was not being taken seriously or addressed expediently enough- so he published the exploit code as Metasploit module. Read more about the vulnerability and what the threat could mean to our SCADA infrastructure in this article: Computer threat for industrial systems now more serious.
