Poll: What Is Your Operating System?

Monday December 22, 2008
Good, bad, or indifferent, it seems like 2008 was the year of Windows Vista. Windows Vista was subject to much criticism. Some of it was legitimate. Much of it was misguided. As the Windows Mojave Project proved, the bad press and negative marketing from competitors like Apple apparently worked though. Users who had no firsthand knowledge of Windows Vista and no idea why they apparently didn't like it, were very impressed with the operating system when they thought it was a Top Secret Beta version of the next generation Windows operating system.

I like Windows Vista. I have been using it since Beta and I have always liked it. The only problem I ever had was difficulty in finding Vista-compatible drivers for some devices during the first few months. But, since the vendors caught up with the OS release I haven't had a problem. Now, I have problems using Windows XP because I am used to the layout and conventions in Vista and miss the features and functionality in XP. Now, I am using a test version of the next generation Windows which has even more cool features. I like my Windows. But- what do you like? What is your primary operating system? Have you made the switch to Vista? Are you holding out for the next generation Windows? Are you part of the growing Mac OS X crowd? Vote in the poll below and feel free to comment on this post with any thoughts or feedback.

I have never used Vista. I heard of the difficulties with it when it first came out. I actually am tired of Windows, but most of us have too much invested to change. It is so bloated and constantly updating it is a pain. It takes a long time to install or re-install. I do not like having parts of programs here and there. That is why we have so many utility program. I would prefer everything for one program in one directory. I would like to be able to install what I want out of the Windows environment and not be forced to install Drivers, Browsers etc. that I do not want. I would still like to boot to the dos level to play some of the old “Doom like” games. I have many reasons for not upgrading to Vista as I haved used every version of Windows since it began. I do like to be able to multi-task etc. I use xp pro and 98 2nd at the moment. I also do not like the facat that MS decides not to support older systems. If car makers did that they would be out of business very soon. Nuff Said.

I appreciate you sharing your opinion. There are some aspects though I do not agree with, or at least that aren’t unique to Windows. Every OS has updates. Microsoft updates the OS, and the browser, and the Office products, and other applications. When you run other operatings systems, they still have updates and there are still add-ons and 3rd-party tools to keep patched as well. And, every software vendor phases out support of legacy systems. When Apple came out with OS X they severed most, if not all, of their backward compatibility for previous Mac OS’s. Mozilla officially phased out support for Firefox 2 last week. It is just a part of life. They can’t support everything forever.
