Studies Show Teens Exhibit Risky Behavior on MySpace

Monday January 5, 2009
Two recent studies have concluded that a majority of teens tend to exhibit risky behaviors on MySpace. According to this Yahoo! Tech article, "54 percent of the publicly available accounts they checked contained information about high-risk behaviors: 41 percent mentioned substance abuse, 24 percent sexual behavior and 14 percent violence."

One of the researchers stated that "many teens are unaware of how public and permanent Internet information can be, while parents often do not know what their kids are up to."

While not directly related to the types of information displayed or behaviors exhibited by teens in these studies, it is also a good idea to be aware of the risks when using social network sites such as MySpace. Facebook, another very popular social networking site, allows friends of friends or people who don't even know you to see your profile, view your photos, read comments on your personal page, and more. There are ways to limit or disable those bevahiors, but by default you must be very cautious about what you put up because there is no way to know who will see it. People worry about steep food costs and obesity, though, they spend less on ‘back to school ‘ , citing recession. People criticize the car manufacturers for their inferior energy efficiency, while the articles over the future renewable energy and energy- efficient autos can’t be easily found on the the front page. People are concerned about the unhealthy diets, however, they ignore the toxic environments on the internet in the name of freedom. War calls for more substance abuses, internet porns, violences, too much gaming to paralyze the conscience, rationality. Teens, youths are in dire need of their parents’ care and love above food, which lead them to use internet for the sound informations, education, just as the new president mentioned. THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION !

Besides being dangerous, risky myspace behaviors have long term effects on a person’s online reputation. Online Reputation Management services can help to reduce the effects of negative online exposure.

I think that we need to take a step back before we start believing everything a teenager says on a social networking page!
