Net Security
In the Spotlight | More Topics | New Feature
from Tony Bradley, your Editor and Guide
The new blog format has increased the amount of information I can bring in a given week. By linking to outside content I can provide information on many more topics than just the 2 or 3 articles I might write in a given week.

The result is that there are so many new stories and blog entries in a given week that they don't all fit in this newsletter. To keep up and stay informed I recommend you either visit the site frequently or use a product like I mentioned in last week's newsletter to subscribe to the RSS feed and be notified whenever something new is posted.

Above and beyond the links in this newsletter, there were also news items this last week regarding a DoS flaw in Cisco Catalyst switches and new version of Apache Web Server to fix four DoS flaws. There was news of a new Microsoft patch for a vulnerability that affects all versions of Windows, a story of a 17-year old French boy arrested for defacing over 2000 web sites and a blurb about a new information security law in New Zealand.

The list goes on and on. With so much news and so many stories future newsletters will only be addressing or highlighting the hottest and most important. Again, I invite you to subscribe to the RSS feed or visit the site more frequently to keep up. You can view the blog archives to go back and see what you've missed.

Have a great week!

If You Can't Beat 'Em, Join 'Em
The President of P2P (peer-to-peer) network Grokster, Wayne Rosso, has decided to launch his own lobbying organization to represent the interests of P2P networking on Capitol Hill. In the face of intense lobbying by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) aimed at abolishing P2P networking, Rosso feels that the P2P community must band together to present their case to Congress as well.

Many people don't run updated antivirus software or use personal firewall software because they don't even know what it is or what its supposed to do. However, there are a great many people out there that know about such applications and are aware they should use them, but can't afford to buy the popular commercial products. The Free Tools section of the Internet / Network Security site provides links to software and utilities for all aspects of computer and network security- antivirus, firewalls, pop-up ad blockers, spam blockers, encryption, intrusion detection and more. Check it out and find out that you can be secure without breaking the bank.

Book Review: Incident Response
Douglas Schweitzer has written a superb book that anyone responsible for handling computer incident response should be required to read. This book provides all of the information needed to properly prepare for, detect and recover from a security incident.

New Feature
Express Yourself By Ranking Articles
Beginning on Thursday, July 10 About.com added a new feature to the articles on the various Guide sites. Readers can now rate the articles from 1 through 5 to vote for whether or not they would recommend that article to other readers. Users can only vote once for each article- even if its a 5 page article a vote on page 3 or 4 will count for the whole article. In the near future About.com will begin to use the ratings provided by the Users to highlight popular articles so that other Users may benefit from them as well. As you read an article, look at the bottom of each page for the Rate This Article box and express yourself. For an example of what the Rate This Article box looks like you can look at the bottom of this article. To review past articles you may have liked and place your votes for them you can refer to the articles archive.
