| from Tony Bradley, your Editor and Guide The United States authorities arrested another script-kiddie this past week in connection with the MSBlast series of worms. The two arrests have both been related to new versions- slight modifications to the original worm code. There still seems to be no sign of the original author(s). I reviewed two books this past week that are both slightly old by tech book standards, but are very good books with information that is still valid today. Counter Hack by Ed Skoudis (also the creator of the Hack-Counter Hack Training Course) provides information about the vulnerabilities in your systems and how hackers go about identifying and infiltrating your computer. The book also provides detailed information on what you can do to secure your computers. The other book is the E-Mail Virus Protection Handbook from Syngress Publishing. This book provides an overview of malicious code and a look at the weaknesses in some of the major email software. Email is a common means of spreading viruses and other malicious code and this book will help you to protect yourself from becoming a victim. In the coming week be sure to check back for an article on VPN as well as an article on the free open source vulnerability scanner Nessus. There will also be more book reviews. | ||||||||||||||||||||

| Book Review: E-Mail Virus Protection Handbook It seems like the majority of the emails that arrive in my inbox these days are viruses, spam or both. Email has long been a favorite attack vector for malicious code authors. The E-Mail Virus Protection Handbook provides a terrific overview of the different types of malicious code threats, the weaknesses and vulnerabilities in many of the most common email client applications and tons of great advice for how to protect yourself and use your email effectively without becoming a victim of a virus. This is a great book that anyone who uses email would benefit from reading. |
