Welcome back!

Microsoft released a new Security Bulletin this past week. MS03-040 is a cumulative patch for Microsoft Internet Explorer. It fixes all previous vulnerabilities as well as two new flaws. The severity is ranked as critical so users should download and implement the patch as soon as possible.

There were a number of good articles published on the SecurityFocus.com web site last week. You can check out some of the links below to read those. We also had a review of the Co-Mail Secure Email Service contributed by one of our readers. If anyone out there has an article related to computer and network security that they would like to share, feel free to submit it to me and I will be happy to consider posting it to the site.

I posted two new book reviews this week. SQL Server Security and Hack Proofing Sun Solaris 8 are both good books that you should check out if you need to learn more about securing SQL Server or Solaris. I also posted a review of Nessus- a flexible and powerful and free vulnerability scanner.

Book Review: SQL Server Security
Microsoft SQL Server is one of the most widely used enterprise database systems. Unfortunately, if not secured and maintained properly it can easily be compromised or be victimized by worms such as the Slammer worm that crippled the Internet in January of this year. SQL Server Security tells you what you need to know about how and why SQL Server is vulnerable and contains tons of tips and information for how you can implement a secure SQL Server installation.

Software Profile: Nessus Vulnerability Scanner
In order to ensure that your network and computers are safe and secure it is valuable to perform vulnerability scans. There are plenty of products available and many of the commercial products can run into the thousands and tens of thousands of dollars. Nessus is a free, open-source vulnerability scanner with exceptional power and flexibility. The vulnerability database is updated daily and because of its modular, open-source construction you can also create your own vulnerability tests.

Book Review: Hack Proofing Sun Solaris 8
Solaris 8 is not the most current release of the operating system, but anyone new to administering and securing a Solaris system will most likely learn a lot from reading Hack Proofing Sun Solaris 8: Protecting Your Network From Attack. The authors present a lot of good and useful information in a way that most people can grasp. It has enough detail to teach what it needs to teach, but not so much that its overwhelming.

Top Picks - Top Wireless Network Security Books from your Guide
Wireless networks are popping up everywhere- they are in homes, companies and college campuses. They are springing up in coffee shops and bookstores. With private, confidential and sensitive data being beamed around the airwaves where anyone can intercept them it is important that you take the necessary precautions to secure your wireless connection. These books will help you out.

1) How Secure Is Your Wireless Network?
How Secure Is Your Wireless Network? provides detailed coverage of the available wireless protocols and the pitfalls of each (like interference with common household devices such as cordless phones and baby monitors). This book is a very good resource. Barken does a good job of explaining most of the concepts and steps in relatively plain English though.

2) Building Secure Wireless Networks With 802.11
The authors of this book have extensive first-hand knowledge of the technology and concepts they write about. The problem is that if your network traffic is flying through the air to your wireless networked computers, it can also be intercepted by unintended recipients. If you are going to delve into the world of wireless networking, you should read this book to learn how to do so securely.

3) Hack Proofing Your Wireless Network
Hack Proofing Your Wireless Network is an invaluable resource for implementing or administering a wireless network. The case studies, Security Alerts, FAQ's and other features of this book all help to provide a comprehensive, must-read book on wireless network security. If you are new to the concept this book is written in a way that you will understand. This book also makes a great reference.
