Welcome back!

This past week I posted blurbs and links to a slew of excellent articles. You can click on the links below to learn more about using honeypots to fight Internet worms, the security updates in the latest version of the Macintosh operating system, get the inside scoop on the DefCon conference and more.

I completed two book review and one product review this past week. See the links below for my assessment of the books SSCP Prep Guide and Hacking Exposed- Web Applications as well as the software application Backup For One.

I have begun working on the lessons to post a new class like the Free Computer Security 101 Class, but this one will be dedicated to wireless network security. I hope to have it completed, posted and ready to go by the end of this week.

Book Review: SSCP Prep Guide
The SSCP certification is sort of an entry-level version of the very popular CISSP certification from ISC2. It covers seven distinct areas and achieving the certification demonstrates a certain level of competence when it comes to information security. Debra and Michael Isaac bring more than 40 years of experience in information security to writing this book. It won't substitute for real knowledge and actual experience, but The SSCP Prep Guide: Mastering the Seven Key Areas of System Security is a great book for refreshing your memory and ensuring you are adequately prepared for the types of questions you can expect to see on the exam.

Software Profile: Backup For One
Many users fail to understand the importance of performing regular backups of important or personal files. Unfortunately for these people it is usually AFTER they have lost everything that it occurs to them. Windows does have built-in backup functionality for those who choose to use it. However, a product like Backup For One makes scheduling regular backups easy.

Book Review: Hacking Exposed- Web Applications
Joel Scambray and Mike Shema have written an excellent book about web application security. Hacking Exposed- Web Applications: Web Application Security Secrets & Solutions is an excellent contribution to the highly-respected Hacking Exposed series of books. This book helps administrators and developers understand how attackers gather information to identify their targets, how they find the weaknesses to exploit, what the common vulnerabilities are, and- most importantly- the book offers tips, advice and checklists for how to protect your web servers and web applications from becoming victims of these attacks.
