from Tony Bradley, your Editor and Guide
Welcome to another week of Internet / Network Security. I began writing a series of brief articles introducing different concepts and technology that can be used by a malicious attacker to gain information about your network- or by you to secure your network. There were also a couple of new book reviews this week and a number of blurbs linking to news and information from other sites. Click through the links below to see what's new.

In the Spotlight
Introduction to Packet Sniffing
Used properly, packet sniffing can be a valuable tool to help a network administrator monitor and maintain the flow of traffic on the network. However, it is also possible to gather sensitive information such as usernames and passwords that can be used to compromise your network. When used maliciously, packet sniffing is a powerful tool to help an attacker gain useful information to help infiltrate other machines on your network.

Introduction to Port Scanning
One of the primary tools used by malicious attackers to assess your network weaknesses is the port scan. By running a port scan an attacker can find out what "doors" into your network are open. Once they know that information they can begin to research what sorts of vulnerabilities or exploits that might open you up to. This brief article provides an overview of what port scanning is and how it works and what sorts of things you can do to protect your network from malicious attacks.

Book Review: The Myth of Homeland Security
Marcus Ranum, well-known in the world of computer and network security, has turned his sights on the broader security of protecting our nation. In The Myth of Homeland Security Ranum takes a critical look at things such as the Homeland Security Act and the PATRIOT Act and illustrates how many of the initiatives and policies put forth in the interest of national security do nothing to truly protect the country. The book is intelligent, engaging and humorous and will help you to think more critically and arrive at your own conclusions regarding Homeland Security.
