Professional organizations and individuals are now differentiated by security, high assurance digital certificates and a .pro address
New York - June 3, 2004 - Starting today, professionals may differentiate themselves on the Internet by using a .Pro domain name extension, validating their identity as doctors, lawyers or CPAs and protecting the confidentiality of online communications through the use of digital certificates issued with each new .Pro domain name.
Internet users will now be able to identify legal, medical and accounting web sites, simply by checking for a .Pro extension. .Pro is a new web address extension (like .com, .net, .org) intended to be exclusively used by the professional community. It enables professionals, corporations or organizations providing professional services, to reserve and purchase their own .Pro web address.
Comodo, a global leader in information security and other services, is working with .Pro registry operator RegistryPro, a subsidiary of Chicago-based Web-hosting leader Hostway Corp., to provide the security features of the .Pro top-level domain (TLD).
"We are grateful to RegistryPro for giving us the opportunity to be a part of this historic launch and we applaud the visionary steps that RegistryPro has taken to satisfy the need for higher levels of identity assurance required by the professional community," said James Langman, Senior Business Development Manager for Comodo. "The relationship between a professional organization and its client base, is built on trust - something that's hard to win, but simple to lose. Comodo is delighted to give RegistryPro access to our world renowned innovative security technology and expertise in setting up a cost effective CA infrastructure."
The requirements to comply with major laws - including Sarbanes-Oxley, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act), FISMA (Federal Information Security Management Act) and CSBIA (Californian Security Breach Information Act) demonstrate the growing legislative pressure faced by the professional community over the security of online solutions and services that they deliver and use. With numerous studies now showing a substantial increase in the number of Phishing attacks and identity thefts, confidence in the Internet will be tested in the coming months. As the exclusive operator of the .pro TLD, RegistryPro is the first registry to require enhanced security, thus providing a foundation for professionals who communicate online, and who have security and confidentiality obligations to meet.
