Charter Communications Hijacks Windows Live Search Engine

From Tony Bradley, CISSP-ISSAP, for About.com

Whew! At Least I Can Opt Out...Sort Of

So, Charter Communications hijacked my Web browswer search engine for their new 'powered by Yahoo!' service, or feature, or whatever they want to call it (I am still calling it browser hijacking).

They are providing their 'service' as an option, but they are unclear on the concept of options and have chosen to have all customers 'OptIn' without their consent. At least they provide an 'OptOut' though, right?

Sort of. Apparently, if I don't want the 'privilege' of using their 'service', you have to let them write a cookie to your computer. If you ever happen to delete the cookie, you get hijacked again. No cookie = browser hijacking.

If you want to change your setting in the future though, don't believe the message here, or try this link. Contrary to what Charter Communications says on this site, the site http://optin.charter.net does not exist. I believe that would be another point against them in the ethical / legal department.

For the record, if you do want to change your settings, try this link instead ww11.charter.net/options.
