Four Security Bulletins From Microsoft - All Critical

Tuesday March 11, 2008
For March, Microsoft released only four new Security Bulletins, but all four were rated as Critical by Microsoft. Aside from being Critical, the four Security Bulletins had something else in common- they are all related to Microsoft Office. Basically, there are vulnerabilities in Excel, Outlook, Office, and Office Web Components. In each case, the vulnerabilities could potentially be exploited to allow an attacker to control the target system and execute malicious code remotely. With Microsoft Office being such a dominant product suite for office productivity, it also represents a huge target, so patching the vulnerabilities before* successful exploits are developed in the wild would be a good thing. Take a look at the summary, and click on the links for more details about the vulnerabilities, as well as links to the patches to protect your computer: Microsoft Security Bulletins: March 2008.

*NOTE: It's too late! I did not realize it when I wrote the original post, but there is already exploit code in the wild for the Excel vulnerabilities identified in MS08-014. That increases the urgency of applying the MS08-014 patch. If you are not configured for Automatic Updates, I recommend you visit the Windows Update site immediately and apply the appropriate patches.
