Firefox Issues Security Update...Mostly

Monday December 22, 2008
Firefox 3 has been around for about 6 months, but there are still holdouts that are using Firefox 2. Last week an update was released for Firefox, version 2.0.0.19. The update contained a variety of patches including 5 rated as Critical,1 High,2 Moderate, and 2 Low for a total of ten (no wait...make that nine) updates.

The 2.0.0.19 update was supposed to be the final set of patches for Firefox 2 as Mozilla is phasing out support of the older version. However, it was discovered that one of the ten updates was mistakenly not included in the 2.0.0.19 update. Mozilla isn't saying which update missed the boat for security reasons (they don't want to highlight the as-yet-unpatched issue), but they did state that it was not one of the more serious patches.

Mozilla will be rushing a version 2.0.0.20 out the door, and at that point will officially end their support of Firefox 2. If you're still using Firefox 2 though, you should really take a look at Firefox 3, or Google Chrome, or even Internet Explorer 8 (but that is still in Beta so it is only for the more adventurous and patient at this time).
